How to Wash Swimsuits

With the heat of the summer finally arrived in Littleton, it’s now the season of swimsuits! Whether your family vacation finds you beach side or you are a regular at the community pool, chances are your swimsuit will get more use in the next few months than the rest of the year.

swimmingTo keep your swimsuits fresh and looking their best all season long, they need regular care! Just like the rest of your wardrobe, regular laundering of your swimsuits is important for hygiene and longevity. Here are a few tips to wash your swimsuit and keep it lasting longer:

  1. Rinse – every time. When you finish a swim, rinse your suit out right away. The chlorine in most pools and the salt in the ocean can damage the delicate fabrics and elastics in your swim suit. Body oils and sweat also collect in your swim suit, which can build up to stain and wear down your suit. While you might not be able to get all of the chemicals out until you wash the suit, a rinse will help to remove much of the hazards between washes.
  2. Be Gentle. Hand washing is usually recommended for swimsuits, but the gentle cycle on your washing machine is usually a good option. A mesh laundry bag can help to contain your swim suit in the washing machine, preventing it from getting tangled with the other garments in the load and stretching out. Use a gentle detergent and never use bleach. If your suit has specific care requirements on the label, follow them. For the very best care, bring your suits to us for our organic wet cleaning!
  3. Air dry, lying flat. Don’t wring out your suit. While this is a tempting strategy to get rid of the excess water, wringing a swimsuit will stretch it out, damage the elastic, and make your swimsuit wear faster. Instead, try patting your suit down to remove that extra moisture. Let your swimsuit air dry. Lay it flat rather than hang drying to avoid stretching out the material from the weight of the water.

Washing your swimsuits regularly can keep them looking their best, lasting longer, and feeling fresher. And don’t forget to give them a final wash before storing them at the end of the season. Reacting to Wedding Day Stains!

You’ve spent months planning for your wedding day, perfecting every detail. You found the perfect wedding gown and your wedding party looks flawless. Then you walk into the reception – instantly you notice the salad dressing, sauces, glasses of red wine, and your Aunt’s caked on makeup and red lipstick headed towards you for a tight squeeze.

Stain threats are everywhere, and your pristine white gown seems to be a magnet, a target for any potential blemish. But don’t panic! You’ve thought ahead and prepared, you’ve read this article, and you know exactly how to react to wedding day stains!

Do No Harm

The worst thing you can do is make a stain worse in an attempt to fix it. Be sure you know your fabric – if you can identify what types of fabrics were used in the construction of your gown, you can better understand how to treat potential stains. Not all fabrics are created equal – some can be easily treated with common items and others react strongly to even plain water. Keep in mind that your lining fabric could be different than the outer layer, and could react differently to treatments.

Bring your gown into our store for a final pre-wedding cleaning, and ask our experts about your gown, specific fabrics, and stain treatment advice.

If you do pre-treat the stain, use caution! Always test on an inconspicuous area, like the hem or train, to make sure the fabric doesn’t react negatively to your product. Dab, never rub, to treat your stain. Work from the outside in to avoid spreading the stain, and always use a light touch and dab to avoid pushing it deeper into the fabric.

Emergency Kits

Emergency wedding day kits are a handy tool for the well-prepared bride. Websites like The Knot offers a list of items to pack in your day-of wedding kit. You can even purchase pre-made kits on Amazon.  Whether you pack a “kit” or not, here are a few items you could use to treat your stain:

Water – plain water is the go-to resource for treating stains. If you get to a stain quickly with plain water, you can prevent the stain from fully soaking into the fabric. But again, use caution and be careful not to spread the stain further.

White cloths, towels, or cotton swabs – always use a white cloth to tend to stains. Colored fabrics could bleed onto your white gown, so be cautious. Consider the tool you’re using to clean, not just the products you’re applying.

Baby powder – this can be used to soak up oil based stains. Poor a small amount of powder over the stain, let it set for a minute, then wipe away. Follow up with water, if needed.

With these and any other stain removing products, use caution. Always test first (yes, even water can harm some fabrics) and know your fabric.

Relax, and let it go

When in doubt, leave it alone! You do not want to turn a small stain into a big one by trying to treat it. Instead, try covering it up! Many brides recommend chalk as a way to hide stain (but like any product, test first and make sure it won’t cause a bigger stain). You can also use lace, an applique, or even a brooch to match the style of your gown and hide a stain.

Remember, chances are you are the only person who will notice a stain on your gown, so relax and let it go. By the time you get to the reception, most of the staged photos will already be taken and your guests will be too busy visiting, eating, and dancing to notice. There is always Photoshop to remove any evidence of the stain in your wedding photos. Don’t let a stain ruin your wedding day – let it go and enjoy the party!

7 Alterations for a Perfect Wedding Gown

Dreaming of your wedding day, every aspect is perfect! From your wedding gown to your shoes, centerpieces to bouquets, every detail matters. After you’ve hunted to find the right dress, alterations let you perfect the details! Here are seven alterations you can make for your perfect gown:

1 – Hem

Even if your gown fits perfectly, you’ll need to alter the hem. Bring the shoes you plan to wear on your wedding day to the alteration. You will want the hem to fall floor length, without actually touching the ground! The hem is the area of the dress the gets the most soiled – as you move in your gown, the base gathers dust, dirt, even grass. Having the hem altered at right length helps to avoid excess stains and keep your gown gorgeous.

2 – Bustle

If your gown has a train, this is a must-have alteration. Like the hem, your train can collect dirt and dust as you move. The bustle is an easy fix, gathering your train off the ground so you can move freely, mingle with your guests, and dance the night away at your reception!

3 – Waist

Bridal shops often suggest ordering a size too large, especially if you are between sizes (you wouldn’t want to end up with a dress too small!). Unless your gown fits perfectly off the rack, chances are you will need some alterations at the sides or waist of your gown. Having the waist taken in or let out will have your dress perfectly fitting your body – like it was made for you!

4 – Bust / Cups

Wedding dresses often accentuate this area of your body, and a great fit makes all the difference. Especially if your gown features a scooped neck or low back, you may want to have cups added to your dress. This small addition can keep you comfortable and supported on your wedding day.

5 – Sleeves or Straps

Whether you prefer strapless, off the shoulder, or full sleeves, this alteration can highlight your arms and shoulders! Have the spaghetti straps removed to transform into a strapless dress. Add a unique halter, straps, or cap sleeves. If your gown has full or ¾ sleeves, have them fitted to your arms for your perfect look!

6 – Make it You!

Most seamstresses can accommodate your requests – if you want to add an embellishment here, remove straps there, or add a corset back, you just have to ask. Sashes, beads, appliques, and custom alterations let you create a one-of-a-kind dress that is as unique as you!

7 – Clean your gown

After your alterations are complete, have your gown cleaned! Throughout the alteration process, your dress can collect small stains. Regardless of how careful your seamstress may be, pins, needles, and the workspace can leave small marks on your gown. From the fittings, taking your gown on and off, you can leave invisible stains on your dress. Deodorant, body oils, and perfume can leave traces behind on the fabric. Some chemicals can even start to yellow the pristine white fabric if left untreated. Dust and dirt can gather as you wear your gown in the fittings and as it is stored throughout the alteration process. Have your gown cleaned to keep it looking its best for the wedding day!

New Year, New Cleaner: Why you should switch to organic dry cleaning in 2014

become greener, live healthier, and save money just by making the switch to organic dry cleaningWhat if you could make one change in this New Year and take care of several New Year’s Resolutions at the same time?  What if it wasn’t just possible….but easy?

It’s not often that one change can do so much, but it actually is possible to become greener, live healthier, and save money just by making the switch to organic dry cleaning!

How can one small change do so much?

Traditional dry cleaning is done using Perchloroethylene, which is a powerful solvent. Clothes are doused in this chemical in an attempt to strip the stain out.  In fact, this isn’t the only use fo Perchloroethylene — it’s also used for degreasing metal parts and paint stripping!

After the chemical is used, it needs to be sealed in drums and hauled away because it’s a dangerous environmental hazard.  Just think of what that can do to our bodies when there are even trace amounts left on these clothes!

The good news? “Dry Clean Only” doesn’t mean that you have to use chemicals or toxins; it only means that your home washer and dryer are too rough for that dress or suit.

That’s where organic dry cleaning comes in!

Rather than dousing clothes in hazardous chemicals, there is a relatively new process called Wet Cleaning. This process uses state-of-the-art equipment, precise temperatures, gentle soaps and a lot of individual care and attention to clean those “dry clean only” clothes in a way that protects the environment and your health.be green in 2014 by switching to a littleton organic dry cleaner

Not only does this process usually not cost more, it actually helps your clothes last longer, saving you money and protecting your investment!

Keeping your New Year’s Resolutions is easy this year…make the switch away from traditional dry cleaning to a green, organic, healthy way to clean those “dry clean only” outfits: wet cleaning!

Another unwelcome stain, the red wine spill, takes advantage of other parts of your stain fighting kit.  Sprinkle the stain with salt, and then dab with a damp cloth. Thanksgiving Stains: Preparation is Key!

With all of the clutter at the dinner table on Thanksgiving, chances are there will be an accident or two throughout the evening. Don’t let your holiday be overshadowed by a simple spill of the wine glass. Our team at Green Care Cleaners is here to remind you that getting a simple  stain removal kit ready is one of the most important measures to take before Thanksgiving dinner.

Place a stain removal pen, hydrogen peroxide, distilled white vinegar, club soda, liquid laundry detergent and other stain removal remedies in a drawer close to the dinner table or kitchen.  Having it near the action means you’ll be able to treat a stain as quickly as possible and remove it before it sets.

Should tragedy strike at the dinner table in form of wine, cranberry sauce, gravy or other Thanksgiving spills, keep these tips in mind when treating the accident:

Move fast. Fresh stains are much easier to remove than stains that have been allowed to dry. Act quickly for greater success.

Dab the stain, don’t rub it. When treating a stain use a light colored cloth (preferably white) and dab the stain. Rubbing can cause it to spread and set.

Apply to the back of the stain. When applying a stain remover, it is a best-practice to apply it to the back of the stain for optimal results.

Wash and repeat. Be sure to thoroughly wash the item after treating a stain in cold water. If the stain is still there after the wash, bring it to our team at Green Care Cleaners and we’ll use our organic wet cleaning process to remove the stain and restore your garment.

Adding a stain removal kit to your Thanksgiving checklist is an easy way to save the day, should a dinner guest spill on themselves or on your tablecloth. When in doubt, you or your guests can always bring a tarnished fabric to our Littleton Dry Cleaning shop to clean and preserve your clothes. For any questions, be sure to call us at (303) 798-0515.
