Summer Stain Threats!

We hope you’ve enjoyed your summer as much as we have! Spending time outdoors, picnics, barbeques, heat, cold treats… all of these things make summer fun, but also pose threats to your favorite summer clothes!

Try these tricks to get rid of some common summer stains:

Grass & MudGrass stain threat

Whether you enjoy spreading a blanket for a picnic or your kids roll around the backyard, grass stains seem like an inevitable part of summer. These can be particularly tricky due to green chlorophyll in grass. First soak the stain in cold water and vinegar (2 to 1 ratio) or use a pretreatment product, like Spray ‘n Wash or OxiClean. Launder using a detergent with enzymes, to help break up protein stains. If it persists, bring your garment to us for more treatment!

If you find mud smeared on your garment, first let it dry then brush off as much as possible. Pre-treat with a gentle detergent and water, and bleach any remaining stain with the same vinegar and water solution above.

Condiments

Picnics, barbeques, hotdogs, burgers… condiments galore! Ketchup, Mustard, and Barbecue Sauce all can leave evidence behind on your shirt. At first sign of a drip, scrape away excess sauce and soak or dab the stain with water as soon as possible. Pretreat with liquid laundry detergent or prewash stain remover, then wash in the warm water (if appropriate for the fabric). For lighter fabrics, hydrogen peroxide could be sprayed on the stain to act as a mild bleach.

Sweet, sugary treats are a favorite aspect of summer, but can leave messy traces. Ice cream should be pre-treated with an enzyme detergent. Soak in detergent dissolved in water for at least 30 minutes then wash normally.

Popsicles packed full of sticky sugar and food coloring leave behind bright traces on clothing. Soak as soon as possible in cold water, then wash normally. Add color-safe bleach, great for water-based stains, for larger or tricky stains.

Sunscreen

This summer staple will inevitably leave traces behind along the edges of your clothing and swimsuits. Spray sunscreen can be a sneaky offender, leaving spots of hidden grease stains behind. Remove excess sunscreen right away. A handy trick if you’re at the beach: pour a little sand over the spilled sunscreen. The sand will make the lotion clump and brush off the fabric. Pre-treat with stain remover, laundry detergent, or dishwashing liquid then wash normally.

How to Wash Swimsuits

With the heat of the summer finally arrived in Littleton, it’s now the season of swimsuits! Whether your family vacation finds you beach side or you are a regular at the community pool, chances are your swimsuit will get more use in the next few months than the rest of the year.

swimmingTo keep your swimsuits fresh and looking their best all season long, they need regular care! Just like the rest of your wardrobe, regular laundering of your swimsuits is important for hygiene and longevity. Here are a few tips to wash your swimsuit and keep it lasting longer:

  1. Rinse – every time. When you finish a swim, rinse your suit out right away. The chlorine in most pools and the salt in the ocean can damage the delicate fabrics and elastics in your swim suit. Body oils and sweat also collect in your swim suit, which can build up to stain and wear down your suit. While you might not be able to get all of the chemicals out until you wash the suit, a rinse will help to remove much of the hazards between washes.
  2. Be Gentle. Hand washing is usually recommended for swimsuits, but the gentle cycle on your washing machine is usually a good option. A mesh laundry bag can help to contain your swim suit in the washing machine, preventing it from getting tangled with the other garments in the load and stretching out.   3. Air dry, lying flat. Don’t wring out your suit. Reacting to Wedding Day Stains!

You’ve spent months planning for your wedding day, perfecting every detail. You found the perfect wedding gown and your wedding party looks flawless. Then you walk into the reception – instantly you notice the salad dressing, sauces, glasses of red wine, and your Aunt’s caked on makeup and red lipstick headed towards you for a tight squeeze.

Stain threats are everywhere, and your pristine white gown seems to be a magnet, a target for any potential blemish. But don’t panic! You’ve thought ahead and prepared, you’ve read this article, and you know exactly how to react to wedding day stains!

Do No Harm

The worst thing you can do is make a stain worse in an attempt to fix it. Be sure you know your fabric – if you can identify what types of fabrics were used in the construction of your gown, you can better understand how to treat potential stains. Not all fabrics are created equal – some can be easily treated with common items and others react strongly to even plain water. Keep in mind that your lining fabric could be different than the outer layer, and could react differently to treatments.

If you do pre-treat the stain, use caution! Always test on an inconspicuous area, like the hem or train, to make sure the fabric doesn’t react negatively to your product. Dab, never rub, to treat your stain. Work from the outside in to avoid spreading the stain, and always use a light touch and dab to avoid pushing it deeper into the fabric.

Emergency Kits

Emergency wedding day kits are a handy tool for the well-prepared bride. Websites like The Knot offers a list of items to pack in your day-of wedding kit. You can even purchase pre-made kits on Amazon.  Whether you pack a “kit” or not, here are a few items you could use to treat your stain:

Water – plain water is the go-to resource for treating stains. If you get to a stain quickly with plain water, you can prevent the stain from fully soaking into the fabric. But again, use caution and be careful not to spread the stain further.

White cloths, towels, or cotton swabs – always use a white cloth to tend to stains. Colored fabrics could bleed onto your white gown, so be cautious. Consider the tool you’re using to clean, not just the products you’re applying.

Baby powder – this can be used to soak up oil based stains. Poor a small amount of powder over the stain, let it set for a minute, then wipe away. Follow up with water, if needed.

With these and any other stain removing products, use caution. Always test first (yes, even water can harm some fabrics) and know your fabric.

Relax, and let it go

When in doubt, leave it alone! You do not want to turn a small stain into a big one by trying to treat it. Instead, try covering it up! Many brides recommend chalk as a way to hide stain (but like any product, test first and make sure it won’t cause a bigger stain). You can also use lace, an applique, or even a brooch to match the style of your gown and hide a stain.

Remember, chances are you are the only person who will notice a stain on your gown, so relax and let it go. By the time you get to the reception, most of the staged photos will already be taken and your guests will be too busy visiting, eating, and dancing to notice. 7 Alterations for a Perfect Wedding Gown

Dreaming of your wedding day, every aspect is perfect! From your wedding gown to your shoes, centerpieces to bouquets, every detail matters. After you’ve hunted to find the right dress, alterations let you perfect the details! Here are seven alterations you can make for your perfect gown:

1 – Hem

Even if your gown fits perfectly, you’ll need to alter the hem. Bring the shoes you plan to wear on your wedding day to the alteration. You will want the hem to fall floor length, without actually touching the ground! The hem is the area of the dress the gets the most soiled – as you move in your gown, the base gathers dust, dirt, even grass. Having the hem altered at right length helps to avoid excess stains and keep your gown gorgeous.

2 – Bustle

How to Treat and Prevent Sweater Pilling

How to treat and prevent sweater pilling- Green Care Cleaners- Dry Cleaning Littleton COWith the cold weather from the polar vortex still upon us, there is no better feeling than snuggling in a cozy sweater. If you’re wearing your favorite sweater on a regular basis, you may start to see small balls or pills appear on the fabric. With these tips, you can minimize and remove pilling to increase the life of your garments!

Sweater Pilling

Sweater pilling is an unfortunate, and mostly unavoidable side effect of sweater wear. Pills occur when small tangles of thread and fabric come loose and mat together. These pills occur through the normal wear of the fabric, usually where the garment is rubbed the most. The arms and sides are often the first to show pilling. Softer fabrics and wools are more likely to pill, while acrylic or manmade fibers can hold up longer.

Preventing Pilling

It is not always possible to completely prevent pilling, but there are some steps you can take to postpone and reduce the process to extend the life of your favorite garments! Most importantly, follow the care instructions for the garment to keep it looking its best.

For most sweaters, it is best to turn them inside out before washing on the gentle cycle. Use liquid detergents, or make sure the powdered detergent completely dissolves in the water before adding your clothes.

If you machine dry your garment, remove it immediately when it is dry and put it away. Your sweater will rub against the other garments in the dryer, which could lead to pilling. Instead, you may want to lay your garment flat to dry (line drying or hanging could cause your sweater to stretch out). You can also bring your sweaters and garments into our store to be cleaned with our organic wet cleaning process!

Removing Pills

You have a few different options to remove pilling from your garment, ranging in difficulty and risk. Keep in mind the value of your garment before trying any risky method – it’s best to bring it to us, the experts, to avoid ruining your sweater.

1)     Manually remove the pills, one at a time, using a small pair of scissors or a razor blade. Be extremely careful using this method – do not cut too close to the fabric or you may cut a hole in the garment. Tip: Pull the garment tight over a curved surface to expose pills and reduce the risk of cutting the garment.

2)     Use a pumice stone or fabric comb to remove large pills from your garment. These tools are designed to remove pills and are much less risky than the razor or scissor method above. Cleaning the sweater regularly with a lint or garment brush can also help to remove and prevent pills. Simply run across the taut fabric to remove the pills.

3)     Electric fabric shavers are an effective way to remove pills. These devices are usually battery operated and come with removable rings in various sizes. Follow the instructions for your specific device to minimize the risk of damage. They also are great for rugs, furniture, or blankets.

First things first, it’s best to go into the stain fighting battle well-armed.  Most stains can be dealt with by using some combination of white vinegar, salt, hydrogen peroxide, laundry detergent and dishwashing detergent.  Throw in a way to gently scrape up any excess, and you’ve got a stain fighting kit to take on anything the holidays can throw at you.
